Scoutmaster's Welcome Letter 2019

August 27, 2019

Dear Scouts and Scouters,

Welcome back to another exciting Scouting season and the 101st year of Scouting at Tay House! I hope that you had a fun and relaxing summer. On behalf of the staff, we are very excited to get back to Tay House on Monday nights, and we hope that you and your son(s) share this same sentiment! The Staff and I have been continually working to prepare for the upcoming scouting year.

Communication is key in an ever-changing organization like Tay House, and we strive to get information out as efficiently and accurately as possible. Our main line between the troop and your family is on Monday night meetings during announcements. This is followed by your home receiving a call from your son’s Patrol Leader each week, weekly emails in your inbox, and lastly by mailings (you should receive this letter in both hard copy and digital formats). We also strongly encourage all parents to participate in Troop Committee Meetings on the second Monday of each month. Troop Committee meetings are a great way to get answers to your questions about the Troop, as well as helping out with the many projects that the Staff cannot address on a week-to-week basis. Scott Ashley and Mike Gregoire continue as our Committee Co-Chairmen this fall, and they have a variety of projects in need of parent assistance.

There are a few housekeeping notes as we start the year. First, I have always taken great pride in wearing the Tay House Uniform on Monday night. I believe that this uniform, and the way in which our scouts wear it helps Tay House stand out among the crowd. I have enclosed a write up about the uniform with some reminders as to what the expectations are when wearing it. Remember, the uniform contributes a great deal to the inspection points each week!

This Scouting year, all returning scouts will owe dues of $90 payable to Tay House Troop 19 by the end of September. Enclosed you will find a “Form for Scout Money Transactions,” to be completed and turned in ANY time a check or payment is brought to the cabin. Please take a moment to complete this form (also available on our updated website) so that the troop can better track any money changing hands. During regular Monday night meetings, scouts will have the opportunity to turn payments in, please have them do so to alleviate any confusion during the start or end of the meeting crowds.

We will be utilizing the BSA web based software tool Scoutbook this year. This tool will allow us to do a number of things as all get more comfortable with using it, but our first use of the software will be for advancement tracking. Please take the time to make an account on the website . We will be able to track requirements there, and you and your scout can communicate with the advancement department when scouts are ready to have something signed off.

Please review the enclosed calendar and be sure to mark Scouting events on the family calendar as well. Here are a few important dates for the start of this year:

  • September 9, 7:30-9:00pm – First Meeting of the year!
  • September 20-22 – First Campout - High Tor Wildlife Management Area
  • October 11-14 – Campout, TBD
  • October 21, 7:00pm – Fall Court of Honor (at Seton Catholic School)

Again, I am very excited to start the new Scouting year and hope you are as well. If at any time you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to me. My e-mail is , and my cell is 585-208-0250. We look forward to seeing you on September 9th !

Yours in Scouting,

Timothy Castelein
